Use lek as the default
Plan to pay in Albanian lek. Some tourism businesses quote or accept euros, but the exchange used may be less favourable and change is often returned in lek. Use the Bank of Albania’s official exchange reference to understand the market, then compare the real card or cash rate you are offered.
Carry more than one payment method and keep a small cash reserve separate from your wallet.
Cards and accommodation payment
Cards are increasingly useful in Tirana, larger hotels, supermarkets and established restaurants. Small guesthouses, buses, market stalls and rural businesses may still prefer or require cash. A card guarantee on an accommodation platform does not always mean the property will charge that card.
Before arrival, ask whether payment is online, at check-in or at checkout; which currencies and cards are accepted; and whether any city or local charge is cash-only.
ATMs and dynamic currency conversion
An ATM can add its own access fee, while your bank can add withdrawal or foreign-exchange fees. Review the full screen before confirming. If the machine offers to convert the withdrawal into your home currency, that is dynamic currency conversion; compare carefully and usually prefer to be charged in lek so your own provider performs the conversion.
Never rely on one card. Bank controls, damaged machines and withdrawal limits are mundane problems that become serious only when the next stop is rural.
What a budget should include
A useful Albania budget is a method, not a timeless daily number. Add accommodation for your month, transport for your actual route, two normal meals and one paid activity, then include parking, sunbeds, transfers, fuel, insurance and card/ATM fees where relevant.
The coast in August and a city route in November are different products. A bus trip can be cheaper than a rental and still need one private transfer; a low car headline rate can expand through insurance, deposit, parking and border permissions.

Tipping and everyday payments
Round up or leave a modest tip when service merits it; do not import a rigid percentage as though it were law. Check whether service is included and hand a tip directly when that matters. For taxis and transfers, agree the total and currency before departure.
Keep small notes for cafés, bakeries, buses and minor purchases. Breaking a large note should not become the driver’s problem at departure time.
Price a transaction before accepting it
The Bank of Albania reference rate is a benchmark, not a promise that a card, ATM or business will use it. Record the transaction currency and compare the total after fees.

Build three budgets from the same route
Keep the route fixed and change only accommodation level, transport and paid activities. This shows what comfort actually costs without pretending one daily figure fits a beach week, a mountain chain and a city trip.
Add a separate friction line for terminal taxis, parking, luggage storage, beach access or one private transfer. Add insurance and rental-car deposit exposure outside the ordinary spending total. Reprice with live dates before booking.
