What to see without turning it into a checklist
Begin with the castle for geography, then choose one house museum for domestic architecture and one twentieth-century site for political context. The bazaar is a living commercial street as well as a visual set; do not let souvenir browsing replace the history.
Arrival and luggage
The bus arrival and old-town accommodation may be vertically far apart even when the map distance looks small. Arrange a taxi or host pickup when carrying luggage. Drivers should request an exact parking approach and avoid discovering the cobbles after dark.
Where it fits
Gjirokastër is the strongest bridge between Berat/Përmet and Sarandë or Himarë. Give it two nights on a ten-day trip; use the extra day for a verified valley or food excursion only after the town itself has time.
Build the visit vertically
Gjirokastër’s old town climbs. Group the bazaar, castle and one historic house into the same upper-town day instead of returning repeatedly from a lower hotel or bus stop. The Cold War Tunnel is a different interpretive chapter and should not be squeezed between decorative shopping stops.
Choose between the Skenduli and Zekate house experiences according to current access and guiding, rather than assuming every historic interior is open. The castle deserves time for the site itself and the views; it is not simply a backdrop above the bazaar.

Arrival is below the postcard
Many intercity arrivals use the lower road system while the historic core sits uphill. Confirm whether the property offers pickup, where a taxi can stop and how far luggage must be carried. Drivers should obtain parking instructions before entering narrow old-town approaches.
Two nights are the useful minimum for a full upper-town day. Add a third for Antigonea, the Drino valley or a slower onward connection; do not call a late arrival plus early departure a two-day visit.

Use Gjirokastër as the southern hinge
The town connects naturally with Përmet and the Vjosa inland, or Sarandë and Butrint toward the coast. Himarë can fit for drivers, but bus travellers should verify the precise coastal link rather than assuming the shortest map line is the easiest public-transport route.
Skip Gjirokastër only when mobility on steep stone streets is a major constraint and the route cannot provide accessible transport or a suitable lower-base plan. Berat is the alternative with a different, still sloped, river-city structure.
