The 10-Day Albania Itinerary: A Car Route and a Bus Route

Compared with our seven-day heritage route, the extra time goes to Himarë. Three nights mean an arrival afternoon and two full days, rather than one beach morning squeezed between drives. Berat and Gjirokastër keep their two-night stays; the return night in Tirana also remains.

Choose this route when both the coast and the old towns matter. If swimming is the reason for travelling, exchange one historic-town stop for more time by the sea. If mountain walking is essential, use a northern itinerary instead of trying to attach Theth to this southern trip.

In Berat, make one outing to the castle quarter and another across the lower neighbourhoods. In Gjirokastër, group the old bazaar, a historic house and the castle around breaks, rather than rushing between them after a transfer. Two nights in each place let you leave the suitcase at your accommodation while you explore.

Avoid advance bookings for every hour of these days. Museum opening information can change, and an early start is often more useful than a tightly packed schedule. Put the visit you care about most first and regard a second museum as optional.

Stay within reach of the waterfront if you want to walk to dinner and swim without moving the car. A hillside property can offer a quieter setting, but you should establish how you will reach town after dark. Ask where guests actually park and whether the approach involves steps.

Day 7 can be a local beach day. Leave day 8 for a second beach, a short outing or more of the same; you do not need to visit Ksamil simply because it appears in other Albania itineraries. In unsettled weather, use the time for an unhurried lunch and town exploration rather than chasing a promised beach experience further down the coast.

Compare the dated Gjirokastër–Himarë and Gjirokastër–Sarandë options before deciding where to sleep. Sarandë is a different kind of stay: a larger coastal town, with more of the trip organised around the waterfront and onward connections. It is not a like-for-like substitute for a small Riviera base.

If your usable service goes to Sarandë, keep the same three-night allocation there. Visit Ksamil or Butrint only after checking the outward and return transport; do not reserve an activity before you know how you will get back. Avoid changing coastal hotels merely to follow this guide’s original place name.

Protect the whole day for getting back to Tirana. Time in a vehicle is only part of it: packing, reaching the departure point, breaks and the final hotel transfer also take time. Check the current road route or bus service close to departure, rather than treating an old travel-time estimate as a deadline.

For a rental car, compare the return-office hours with the following day’s flight. Dropping the car on day 9 may simplify an early departure, but arrange the remaining hotel and airport transfers first. By bus, avoid relying on the last possible departure north.

This itinerary needs a coast stay that you actually want. Outside the main beach season, ask your chosen accommodation which nearby restaurants and services are operating. If the answer does not fit your plans, spend the coastal nights in a town with the services you need or redistribute them to the inland stops.

For hot-weather travel, choose rooms on cooling, shade and access as well as appearance. On the transfer days, a flexible check-in arrangement is valuable. Compare the total for nine nights and the complete transport chain; a cheaper room requiring repeated taxis may not be the cheaper base.

Do not keep all four bases and reduce every stay to one night. For a late arrival plus an early return, drop either Berat or Gjirokastër and distribute those nights between the remaining town and the coast. That preserves full days and lowers the number of times you pack.

Travellers arriving via Corfu should start with the Sarandë crossing guide and redraw the sequence from the south. This Tirana-to-Tirana version is not designed around a ferry connection, and its opening and final nights should not be copied unchanged.
